India's Digital Public Infrastructure has emerged as one of the country's defining public policy successes. Platforms such as Aadhaar, UPI, DigiLocker, and the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) have transformed how citizens access identity, payments, healthcare, commerce, and government services. The India Stack model has also attracted global attention, with several countries exploring similar digital public infrastructure frameworks.
Yet, behind every successful digital platform lies an often-overlooked reality: digital public infrastructure is only as strong as the physical infrastructure that supports it. At the heart of this foundation is high-speed fibre connectivity, enabling millions of digital interactions every day.
Every UPI payment, telemedicine consultation, online classroom, e-governance portal, or cloud-based public service relies on high-speed, reliable internet connectivity. While digital applications receive public recognition, it is fibre optic infrastructure that enables these services to function securely, efficiently, and without interruption. Without a robust physical backbone, digital public infrastructure cannot achieve its full potential.
As per estimates from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), India's digital economy is expected to contribute nearly 20% of the country's GDP by 2030. With the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing, the Internet of Things (IoT), 5G, and future 6G technologies, the demand for high-speed, reliable data networks will continue to grow. Meeting these demands will require resilient fibre infrastructure capable of delivering high-capacity, low-latency connectivity at scale.
Globally, countries with advanced digital economies have invested heavily in fibre infrastructure as a long-term public asset. Fibre not only delivers faster internet but also offers greater reliability, scalability, energy efficiency, and lower maintenance compared to legacy communication networks. It has become the foundation for smart cities, intelligent transport systems, digital healthcare, research, education, and modern public administration.
The challenge for India is ensuring that this infrastructure extends beyond metropolitan centres. According to government data, millions of citizens continue to live in areas where reliable broadband access remains limited. Digital inclusion cannot be achieved solely through innovative platforms; it depends on whether every citizen, irrespective of geography can access those platforms with confidence. Closing this connectivity gap is therefore as much a development priority as it is a technology imperative.
While the challenge is national, some states are already demonstrating what long-term investment in digital infrastructure can achieve. Kerala's Kerala Fibre Optic Network (KFON) is one such example. Conceived as a statewide fibre backbone, the initiative extends connectivity to government institutions, public facilities, businesses, and households. By treating broadband as critical public infrastructure, the initiative illustrates how fibre networks can strengthen governance, support digital inclusion, and improve access to essential public services. Such experiences provide valuable insights for states seeking to build resilient digital ecosystems.
As India moves towards a future shaped by AI, digital public services, smart manufacturing, and connected communities, the conversation must evolve beyond digital platforms alone. Equal emphasis must be placed on the physical infrastructure that enables them.
India's digital ambitions will ultimately be measured not by the number of digital services it creates, but by how effectively every citizen can access them. Digital Public Infrastructure needs a physical backbone. Investing in resilient fibre networks today will determine whether India's digital transformation remains inclusive, secure, and future-ready for decades to come.
